How Often Should You Replace Compression Stockings?

How Often Should You Replace Compression Stockings

Compression socks serve an essential role in improving blood flow, reducing swelling, and supporting recovery after injury. Yet many people don’t know that compression stockings aren’t permanent. Old or tattered pantyhose can do more harm than good and may not ease your pain.

Let’s break it down. So, after how long do you have to replace compression stockings?

Why Compression Stockings Wear Out

Compression stockings are ‘graduated’, meaning they are tightest at the ankle and gradually become less pressurized towards the top of your leg. Because of this pressure, the elastic fibers that are responsible for maintaining it gradually and naturally become weaker with:

  • Daily wear and stretching
  • Frequent washing
  • Heat exposure from dryers
  • Leg  size difference or fluctuation in swelling

If elasticity is compromised, the stocking’s ability to provide appropriate compression is compromised.

How Often Should You Replace Them?

You might need a new set of compression stockings every 3-6 months if you use them regularly.

Here’s a general guideline:

  • Daily wear: Every 3–4 months
  • Occasional wear: Every 6 months
  • Moderate /medical compression: Recommended by your healthcare provider

If you wear compression stockings for medical reasons such as varicose veins, edema, or post-surgery, then replace them when they should be replaced!

Signs It’s Time for a New Pair

You may need to purchase new compression stockings earlier if you have:

  • The stockings keep slipping down, or they can’t stay up.
  • The material is baggy/ stretched out.
  • Creasing near the ankle or calf
  • Reduced relief for anti-swelling or pain
  • Visible thinning, holes, or pilling

If your stockings are starting to feel unsupportive, chances are they’re also no longer working.

How to Make Compression Stockings Last Longer

With the right care, you can get more use out of your compression stockings:

  • Hand wash or machine gentle cycle
  • Wash with cool or warm water.
  • Dry naturally to protect the fibers (no dryers or direct heat)
  • Alternate between at least two pairs
  • Slip them onto your feet first thing in the morning, when you’ve had a night of horizontal rest, and your swelling is at its lowest.

Great care will not stop wear entirely, but it will help preserve compression for longer.

Why Proper Fit Matters

Even the newest compression stockings won’t work well if they don’t fit right. Sizing can change over time due to fluctuations in weight, muscle tone, and swelling. That’s why it is  crucial to re-evaluate periodically.

Our Keele Physiotherapists can help determine:

  • If your existing stocking is still working
  • If you’re not at the point you should be, you should be compressed
  • When to Restock or Refill Your Socks
